Education

The borough has consistently excelled in education and has gained a reputation for recruiting and retaining high quality and effective teachers. The 2010 OFSTED report states that Wigan Council's Children's Services have once again been assessed as performing well.

From an early age, there is education provision within the borough. Through the Wigan Early Years Development and Childcare Partnership, the borough actively plans and develops the necessary volumes of high quality early years and childcare services. The partnership also consults with parents regarding their needs and co-ordinates the provision of information.

Sure Start is the cornerstone of the Government's drive to tackle child poverty and social exclusion, working with parents-to-be, parents / carers and children to promote the physical, intellectual and social development of babies and young children, so that they can flourish at home and when they start school. Within Wigan Borough there are currently 8 Children's Centres delivering Sure Start services to children, families and communities. A further 10 Children's Centres are planned for the future and work has begun on their development."

There are a broad range of schools within the Borough including state and church establishments, the majority of which operate in modern purpose built premises. The local council has embarked on a programme of further improvements including the replacement of older school buildings.

There is also an excellent choice of colleges for those who wish to continue their education beyond G.C.S.Es. Two schools, the Deanery and St Mary’s, have a sixth form attached to the schools and there is also two stand alone sixth form colleges – Winstanley and St John RigbyWinstanley has recently been named in the top ten Further Education colleges in the country. In addition to these, there is a tertiary college of Further Education – Wigan & Leigh College, with campuses centrally located in the town centres. All of these establishments offer a mix of academic and vocational courses.
