Romans Invade Wigan: September 2010
Arts & Heritage
The Wigan Borough is rich in art and heritage. There are two specialist art centres, which not only provide public access to art, but work with schools to develop individual talent through education. In addition to these centres, the Wigan Borough is also abundant in public art including the impressive Spirit of Wigan sculpture.
Over the past two decades, Wigan has gained international recognition as the place to be for jazz enthusiasts. Every July the distinctive sounds of jazz can be heard throughout Wigan as the Borough transforms into the jazz capital of the world by staging the International Jazz Festival. Major stars of the jazz world including Cleo Laine, George Melly, Maynard Ferguson and even Frank Sinatra Jr have performed at the festival.
Residents of the Borough are proud of the long and varied history of the area and there are many examples of local heritage throughout the Borough. The Museum of Wigan Life in Wigan Town Centre brings this strong heritage together under one roof in an entertaining and informative manner. In the east of the Borough, Leigh Town hall is home to the Borough archives, with thousands of original records, documents and historic local photographs. A local history service for the east of the Borough is also operated in Leigh.
