JJB Head Office, Wigan
Success To Date
The Borough’s track record starts with ongoing success in competitive bid programmes to secure funding from the Government, regional development agency and the European Union. The successful bid for City Challenge status in 1993, brought government investment of £37.5 million to the Borough and kick started efforts to regenerate the local economy, infrastructure and facilities. Further successful bids have obtained funding from the Single Regeneration Budget and Europe, allowing the substantial regeneration and investment taking place in the Borough to continue.
The benefits of this investment and regeneration have persuaded well known international company names, long associated with the Borough to remain, including H J Heinz Ltd, Milliken Industrials, PPG Industries, Record Tools and JJB Sports. The attractiveness of the Borough has enabled the development of major business and industrial sites, for example Westwood Park, Wigan Pier Quarter and Pemberton Business Park.
Planning permission has recently been granted for the development of one of the North West’s first "green" business parks. The Westwood Park development will provide up to 57,000 square metres of high quality business premises. For the last two years, major infrastructure works were underway to open up the site. These were completed ahead of schedule and open to the public in March 2007.
Wigan Pier Quarter is an innovative mixed development that will produce a dynamic environment. The combination of existing built heritage with waterfront and contemporary regeneration will create a distinctive area, which is fresh, unique and exciting for the Borough. The mix of developments will include high quality office accommodation, “urban living” style apartments and cultural attractions. The office accommodation in the world famous Trencherfield Mill will be going to market in Spring 2007.
Pemberton Business Park is the Borough largest speculative office scheme, which is expected to generate at least 300 new jobs. The first high quality office schemes were launched in September 2006 and have already proved to be incredibly popular.
The flexibility, willingness and proactive approach of Wigan Borough are all reasons why companies such as Hitchens Foods, Shearings Holidays and Totesport chose the borough as the new location of their expanding business.
Wigan Borough also recognises the importance of smaller, local companies and has made great efforts to provide business and practical support to these companies so that they remain within the Borough. For who knows how large today’s small companies may become in the future?
