- Wigan Borough in Bloom - Horticultural Acheivements

Spring Bulbs
The Wigan Borough in Bloom team have planted over 4 million spring flowering bulbs in the past four years.  In 2007, we planted 575,000 bulbs and 740,000 more in 2008 helping to get Wigan Borough off to a bright and floral start.

Guardrail Planters
During 2007, we have installed 238 guardrail planters in locations such as schools, town centres and villages.  These have been very well-received and accepted by the community.  We have also planted up various planters with local primary schools to be displayed on the guardrails outside school gates.  The total in 2008 is 359 planters so far, with at least another 20 being added to Wigan Town Centre.  in 2007, we trialled Winter planting.  We now have a full 12 month scheme in place for 2008.

Permanent Planting
In the last three years, we have specialised in sustainable planting in all the flower beds throughout the Borough.  These flower beds are located at key gateway entrances, town centre green spaces and in areas of high traffic so as to gain maximum impact.

Floral Displays & Features
Together with the British Trust for Conservation Volunteers (BTCV), the team has installed over 50 recycled plastic planters throughout many of the town centres.  This is twice last year's total.  Other containers for floral displays include seven  of the 4-tiered "Eye-Full Towers" and fifteen 3-tiered planters for schools and community centres.
