- Wigan Borough in Bloom - Reconnecting to Nature

In 2008, Wigan Council’s Environmental Education Team received Neighbourhood Renewal Funding to give local school children the chance to:

‘Reconnect to Nature’

Recent studies have shown that one million children in the country have never visited the countryside and 25% of children have never been in contact with animals.

‘Reconnect to Nature’ aimed to re-establish links to the countryside for young people and as a result, improve their knowledge of food, farming and sustainable living.

As part of the project the children have had the opportunity to grow their own vegetables and take part in horticultural lessons. The lessons involved learning what types of plants can be planted, when they can be planted, how the beds can be maintained for the future and the nutritional value of the food that they can grow.
