Tidy Business Litter Pick: Wigan Town Centre, September 2008

- Wigan Borough in Bloom - Town Centres

The ten town centres across the borough have been a focal point for the Wigan Borough in Bloom camapign.  Working together with local businesses and members of the community, the centres have undergone a dramatic transformation.

Several flower displays of various sizes have been installed throughout the town centres and a number of initiatives have been implemented to improve their overall appearance and encourage communities and businesses to become involved.  These initiatives have included gum busting, anti litter and anti dog fouling campaigns.

The most notable campaign launched in 2008 was the Tidy Business Awards, which was piloted in Wigan Town Centre and will be rolled out to the other town centres in 2009.  The awards are a partnership between local businesses, town centre management and the environmental education team, with the aim of making a visible difference to the quality of the shopping experience in town.

In January 2009, a campaign was launched to tackle the growing problem of fast food litter, which accounts for 25% of all local litter.   The campaign will focus upon the borough's busiest town centres - Wigan, Leigh, Atherton and Ashton.
