- Wigan Borough in Bloom - Recycling and Waste Management

The council has massively increased its provision of services to residents to ensure they can easily access recycling facilities.

From April 2007 to April 2008, residents in Wigan Boorugh recycled:

2,796 tonnes of glass
2,479 tonnes of mixed metals
8,614 tonnes of paper
145 tonnes of plastic
6,547 tonnes of wood

All these materials have been saved from costly landfill thanks to residents' recycling efforts using the council's doorstep collection schemes and the roadside recycling points.

The council has provided new doorstep services to residents as well as roadside recycling points to make it easier fir everyone to easily recycle materials from their home.  Collections for "dry recyclables" (glass, cans and plastics) were introduced for many residents in early 2008.  Green waste and paper collections are now widespread across the borough.  With about 150 roadside "bring" sites (with bottle and can banks) within a mile of most homes, it has never been easier to recycle!

Recent improvements and investments in the borough's Household Recycling Centres (HWRCs) have included clearer information and signage using the national government WRAP recycling iconography.  Frog Lane site and the borough's main facility at Kirkless have bother been planted with attractive displays at their public entrances to further develop the 'clean and green' message of recycling to residents.
