Kick Litter into Touch
Kick Litter into Touch has been a long running anti-litter campaign in Wigan Borough. We have refreshed its message by dedicating resources to get the message into schools, so that pupils understand the issue and effects of litter in their home and school environment. Three major anti-litter campaigns are run every year.
Tidy Business Awards
So far, thirty busineses in Wigan Town Centre have signed up to the Tidy Business Awards programme which is an EnCams initiative. These awards assess businesses against a range of criteria. Depending upon their level of environmental performance, they can receive Bronze, Silver or Gold awards. As part of this project each of the 30 businesses in Wigan town centre have been given 25 bags for life to distribute to their customers as well as hanging baskets to green the area. This scheme is being rolled out to the other town centres during 2009.
Anti Smoking Litter Campaign
During Spring 2008, the council's environmental education team launched a new Anti-Smoking Campaign across all the major town centres in partnership with Smoke Free Wigan. The campaign included a press and radio launch and the giveaway of "Stubby" pouches and free wall mountable cigarette bins for public houses.
Chewing Gum and Dog Fouling Campaign
15,000 Wrap-It pouches will be distributed via public buildings, community centres and health clubs. Pupils at a number of schools have been involved in an anti-dog fouling campaign by designing and distributing 'pooper-scooper' bags. Monitoring has shown a 60% reduction in dog fouling in the pilot area of Atherton.
Anti-Fast Food Litter Campaign
In January 2009, a campaign was launched to tackle the growing problem of fast food litter, which accounts for 25% of all local litter. The campaign will focus upon the borough's busiest town centres - Wigan, Leigh, Atherton and Ashton.
