Working In The Borough - Case Studies - Waterfields
Waterfields of Leigh Ltd was established in 1926 and produces a range of high quality bread, savouries and confectionery items. The family owned business is now run by Richard (Chairman) and John (Managing Director) Waterfield, the grandsons of the original founder.
Over the last seventy five years, the company has gone from strength to strength and now has thirty nine retail outlets across the North West. The ongoing achievements of the company have been recognised through several awards. Waterfields attained Investors in People status in 1997; in 2001 alone won Best Retailer of the Year at the Warrington Business Awards, Best Large Business at the Wigan & Leigh Business Awards and British Champion Baker from the National Association of Master Bakers.
The main manufacturing facility is currently based in Leigh, the home town of the Waterfield family and employs 130 people. In 1984, the company considered moving the manufacturing facility and a number of new locations were considered including sites outside of the Borough. The company eventually decided to move to a new site within the Borough.
Richard Waterfield, Chairman of Waterfields (Leigh) Ltd, advises anyone looking to relocate to Wigan to:
“Concentrate on a loyal and skilled workforce. The Borough is a great place to live, with the countryside on your door step.”
