As the UK’s largest sport retailer, JJB Sports Plc is one of the Borough’s true success stories. JJB Sports Plc was formed in 1971 and by 1994 had over 120 stores nationwide. Since its floatation on the London Stock Exchange, the company has acquired one of its main competitors, Sports Division, and now operates 430 stores across the UK.
Throughout this growth, the company has been based in Wigan and the head offices are currently located within one of the Borough’s main industrial parks, Martland Park.
In 2001, the company took advantage of the development opportunities at the Martland Park and built an additional 100,000 sq. ft. warehousing facility alongside their existing office and warehouse premises.
This facility has given the company increased capacity to continue their store opening programmes. It has also enabled JJB Sports to centralise all distribution, management and administration activities, improving efficiencies and reducing costs.
The strategic location of the Borough, close to main motorway networks, is also an advantage for the company.
