Working In The Borough - Case Studies - William Stantus & Co Ltd
The origins of William Santus & Co Ltd, manufacturers of Uncle Joe’s Mint Balls, can be traced back to 1898 when the wife of the original founder Mr Santus, began to produce the world famous sweets in the kitchen of their Wigan home. Over a hundred years later, the company continues to manufacture in Wigan at its well established factory. The Toffee Works, is now run by John and Anthony Winnard, great, great nephews of Mr Santus.
The quality of the ingredients used and the century old tradition has driven the steady growth of the company. Today it annually manufactures over three hundred tonnes of the sweets in the age old manner, using the secret recipe created by Mrs Santus and known only to John and Anthony.
Demand for the natural sweets continues to grow and now Uncle Joe’s Mint Balls can be found in a variety of outlets including supermarkets, high profile department stores, gift stores and health food shops. They can now even be bought in shops all over the world.
The sweet success is due, in part, to the tradition of the company and its place in Wigan heritage, but the company has always acknowledged the contribution of the local workforce. In today’s modern markets, the company also benefits from the strategic location of the Borough for distribution of its products both in the UK and overseas.
